Abstract

Employees are vital to organisational success. This study investigates the relationship between compensation and benefits and employee retention among Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in Malaysia. Guided by the Social Exchange Theory (SET), the study developed and tested a conceptual framework using a quantitative approach. A total of 755 questionnaires were distributed, with 446 valid responses analysed using Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) and Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modelling (PLS-SEM) through SPSS and SmartPLS. The findings indicate that compensation and benefits have a significant positive effect on employee retention. The study contributes to the literature on employee retention and engagement while extending the application of Social Exchange Theory (SET) and Job Demands–Resources (JD-R) Theory in the Malaysian SME context.
