Abstract
This study investigates how the LitEscape Challenge, a gamified literary escape-room activity, enhances ESL students’ understanding of key narrative elements such as plot, character, setting, theme, conflict, and moral values while promoting deeper engagement with linguistic structures in literary texts. Using a quasi-experimental mixed-methods design involving 30 Form 5 students in Malaysia, the findings showed significant improvements in literary comprehension, motivation, collaboration, critical thinking, and metalinguistic awareness. The study concludes that gamification can effectively improve both literary appreciation and language competence in ESL instruction.
